  • France’s digital campus: ESC Lille breaks new ground by adopting Google Apps Education

September 2008. ESC Lille is the first French business school to use Google Apps™ Education, the collaborative Internet program which provides powerful communication tools and services to improve communication, collaboration, productivity and security between students, faculty and staff.

With its new portal, MYESCLille, the French grand école is offering more interactivity in its teachings and is providing its users with the possibility of learning in alternative ways.

“ESC Lille’s aim is to train the “Internet generation” to use all of the communication tools at its disposal within a professional setting, ultimately making a company more connected, communicative, convivial, collaborative and creative,” says Jean-Pierre Raman, General Director of the ESC Lille Group.

    Training the Internet Generation
Over the last few years the students at ESC Lille can increasingly be characterized as belonging to the “Internet Generation,” a mobile group of individuals completely up-to-date on new Internet technologies. This group tends to change computer tools regularly and promotes a collaborative way of working in business.

Integrating Google Apps Education and My ESCLille’s portal into ESCLille’s community is in large part a response to the increasing importance of the Internet, social networking and Web use in the world today. The adoption of the Google Apps Education pack will foster the sharing of experiences between communities and the progressive development of a collective intelligence.

Understanding collaborative work through the Google Apps Education Pack
The Google Apps Education suite is made up of several applications. When using Google email, students are able to discuss a project in real time and respond to questions immediately and interactively. Gmail™ also offers a new way of organizing and looking for information in an intuitive way by linking key words with online content and by using search engines.

Google Calendar™ allows users to schedule and manage several calendars at the same time. A student could thus schedule an appointment while looking at his or her classmate’s agenda, measure the participation of attendees and inform users of last-minute schedule changes.

Finally, Google Docs™ allows students to collaborate on projects in real time. They learn how to share documents and to give each other access rights. This application is all the more pertinent as the ESC Lille team has noticed a progressive decrease over the years of the use of attached files and multiple document versions.

    Anticipating student needs
Google Apps Education will give students the tools not only to develop their communication skills and to collaborate effectively but to experiment with new ways of working by using more services and collaborative tools.

“ESC Lille makes it a priority to anticipate the needs of its students in an ever-changing world requiring more and more knowledge, expertise, creativity, innovation and self-motivation” says Brigitt Albrecht-Rohn, Marketing Director of the Group. “The Google Apps solution is completely coherent with our motto: your future, our ambition,” she concludes.
